Another life

I ask all of you:” Is it really worth to live like this?“ I beg you to avoid coming up with bland excuses such as “There’s nothing I can do about it” because it is just bullshit, you can always do something about it.

Long time ago, for a longish while, I commuted by taking the train every day to and from Turin. At that time, as well as having a quite busy job, I was studying at University and I would work and revise for my exams without giving up my social life. I’m not saying it was gruelling, but it was challenging and, in spite of my young age, I was certainly experiencing a stressful and hectic life.

At that time, I fell for the song “Un’altra vita” (Another Life) by Franco Battiato, because it perfectly conveyed my feelings. Today I live another life, with a number of issues of course, yet I am very happy with it. The life I live today allows me to observe with a little more detachment the stuff I consider sheer madness although it’s considered normal by many. If I had to describe it “visually”, it would be like being surrounded by frenzied lunatics who are not able to stand still (or centered, if you prefer) for one minute, not physically nor mentally. This frenzy not only prevents people to carry out an action the way it should be carried out, it also removes any chance to enjoy the short time we have on this planet. I ask all of you:” Is it really worth to live like this?“ I beg you to avoid coming up with bland excuses such as “There’s nothing I can do about it” because it is just bullshit, you can always do something about it. I ask you why do you want to throw away this opportunity? What good is there in living as slaves to a schizoid frenzy in which there’s not even time to breathe, to smile, to have a coffee while reading a book, to chat with a friend, or any other activity that should be quite obvious?

It’s a paradox but the lesser the life, the greater the fear of dying that lead to a sick obsession for warnings such as "watch out for this, be careful with that”,"spray this, wipe clean that", basically warnings that will only increase the wealth of Pharmacies, of the producers of biodynamic foods and of the new new age philosophers preaching that by following them, the world would become a wonderful place.

I am sorry to break the news to you, dear reader, but the only one who can make the world a wonderful place, is you, by changing your life. Perhaps by beginning to live a life before death comes to get you and to do that is very simple, you don’t need complex philosophies, fancy diets, clothes, cars, a bigger home, a wonderful partner or other bullshit. An alternative life is so simple: slow down, breathe, do whatever gives you contentment, don’t nag your neighbour. Remember that your time is limited and it can end any time. Please, do not waste it.
